The Simple Marketing of Saying Thank You

Today I want to go back to the basics, back to the drawing board, back to the simple marketing words taught to us when we were two years of age.

If you’ve heard of Dale Carnegie, you’ve heard of his best selling book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.  In chapter two titled, the Big Secret of Dealing with People, Dale notes to give honest and sincere appreciation.  And the single best way to do this as a business owner is to say “thank you.”

Because of the speed of business today, the rush for a sale or new business partners, business owners are getting away from this simple statement that means so much to their bill payers (their customers).

It’s a fact that people want to be appreciated so if your customers are people they want it to.  You should be more than willing to give them this appreciation since they have chosen your business over possible others.  The customary thank you at the end of a bill is not going to cut it, if you know what I mean.

You want more referrals and the best way to make someone do anything is to make them want to do it; and if you give sincere appreciation, you can make your customers give you quality referral business by simply saying, “thank you!”  This is truly simple marketing!

If you always say thank you and you’re personal with it; this will lock in current customers and get them to like you more.

Giving a sincere “thank you” will promote referrals:

Referrals come when they will but you can definitely affect a referral.  You have a valuable product or service you are providing currently with your business; so after they’ve enjoyed your product or service you do something extra.  Do something your competitor is not thinking of and is sleeping on.

Customers have different levels of product or gratification; but they all appreciate a warm “thank you” when they’ve purchased.  This single act can ensure you they will continue as a customer or member, or if they will cancel.

“Thank You” as Direct Mail or E-mail

You’ve built a list with email or direct snail mail begin using it as your thank communications.  They are on your list and if you’re using a program like AWeber or GetResponse, you can add it in your follow up messages or simply put it broadcast email.  It will be personalized, it will be sincere, and you don’t have to stop at just the customers; but all the people who are on your free mailing list.

If your customers get good ole fashion snail mail; it’s even a better shocker, especially since so many people today are loaded with offers and bills in their regular mailbox.  Seeing you greet them with a sincere thank you will change the day and their connection with your company.

Now how do you write a thank you letter or email?  There is no trick to it; come from the heart.  Just think about it like this each time; they chose you over a lot of other companies or businesses.

Put your ego aside thinking things such as, “I gave them the best product or the most valuable service, it’s an even trade.”  That may be the case indeed; but do you think your customers care.

If they find out you voted for Barak Obama or John McCain; that can change a customer instantly.  So those customers choosing you are vital and you should really come to appreciate this and share it with them.

If you’re not good at it; get someone qualified to do it for you.  I do have a few simple marketing tips below if you do it yourself.

v      Make it short (even for big ticket items)
